Corn 'Glass Gem' - These intensely beautiful popcorn kernels look exactly like translucent glass beads. Due to their unique rainbow colours and bright, luscious look, the kernels have been compared to gems. Used mainly for decoration and ornamental purposes, (obviously) these corn plants are also incredibly flavourful and juicy; the most popular form it is served in is popcorn, but it can also be eaten fresh, turned into cornmeal, and added to many dishes.
Planting: Planting season: year round in warm/tropical climates; in temperates climates - spring/summer, seeding directly into the ground 2-3 weeks after the danger of last frost is gone. Soil temp.: 65-85F (+18-20C); Soil: deep, highly fertile, well-drained soils with a pH 6-6.8. Adaptable to heavy soils. Sowing depth: 1-2in (2.5-5cm) deep; Spacing: 3-6in (7-15cm) apart. Plant in blocks instead of rows, which will help with pollination. Row spacing: for early varieties 24in (60cm), for main season crops 30-36in (76-91cm). Light: Full sun; Moisture: Consistent and plentiful; Fertilizing: Corn is a heavy feeder, fertilize ground well in spring with high-quality compost or a complete fertilizer. Harvest in about 100 days.
